Big changes are coming to the intersection of U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street, as the Missouri Department of Transportation is set to kick off the first phase of a major improvement project on March 18. In efforts to streamline traffic and enhance safety, the intersection will undergo extensive modifications, including the construction of new turn lanes and sidewalks, as well as improvements in storm drainage, roadway and driveway realignment. Detailed graphics and more information about Stage 1 of the project can be found on MoDOT's website here.
For local residents and commuters, there will be some inconveniences to contend with. The Amino Brothers Co., Inc., the contractors brought on board for the job, are scheduled for work during the weekdays, specifically Monday to Friday within daylight hours. As per MoDOT, the initial leg of construction will close Alabama Street between Route 59 and Sherman Street, urging motorists to find alternative routes. Connections to Lake Avenue and Brown Street will be also be affected, necessitating detours.
While the construction may present short-term challenges, the intended outcome is poised to benefit the community by improving sight distance for drivers, assisting tractor-trailers with better turning motions, and accommodating more vehicles at the Route U railroad crossing. The completion of Stage 1 is eyed for mid-August 2025, after which further details regarding Stage 2 will be communicated to the public.
For those maneuvering around the area, staking out a new course of travel will become a temporary norm. However, the enhancements promise a smoother transit experience in the long run. Residents and travelers can stay abreast of updates and potential traffic impacts by visiting MoDOT's official website or subscribing to their alerts.
