An armed confrontation between Atlanta police officers and a 42-year-old man occurred yesterday evening in the Sylvan Hills neighborhood, resulting in the man being injured. According to Atlanta News First, the incident happened on the 2800 block of Lakewood Avenue SW around 7:15 p.m. when officers encountered the man, who was reportedly armed and refused to drop his firearm.
The Atlanta Police Department stated that the situation escalated, and at least one officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect and disarming him. After the shooting, the man was taken to a local hospital. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that his condition was stable.
Crime scene tape was placed around the area, with the Nationwide Discount Tires shop highlighted as police searched for evidence, spoke to witnesses, and reviewed surveillance footage. Witness Timothy Weachock, from Indiana, told FOX 5 Atlanta, "Three, about three to five, and it was over."
Weachock, who had driven over 600 miles, said, "I'm kind of numb from the drive... it didn't even phase me that much just because I'm kind of numb from the exhaustion of just driving that far," he told FOX 5 Atlanta. The identity of the man involved and further details about the incident remain undisclosed.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to review the use of force in this case. No police officers were injured during the event. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the details of the shooting.
