A robbery unfolded in the Central West End late last night when a man, absorbed in his cellphone, was startled by a familiar voice only to find himself face to face with a would-be thief. According to authorities, the scenario played out around 9:55 p.m. on the 4200 block of Sarpy Avenue, where a 37-year-old man encountered a male suspect, purportedly in his 20s, brandishing a pocketknife and demanding the victim's property, SLMPD reports.
The startled man, upon recognizing the voice and seeing the knife, chose flight over fight, and fled the area, inadvertently leaving his phone behind in the chaos, which the suspect claimed as booty before making an escape with an accomplice whose identity remains a mystery, the sequence ending as quickly as it began with no injuries reported. The victim later recounted to the police that it was the chilling sound of his own name that broke his concentration from his game, an intuitive alarm that perhaps saved him from a worse fate, the investigation by District 5 is still underway.
Officers fanned out in response to the incident, canvassing the area for evidence, potential witnesses, and surveillance that might assist in identifying the suspects. The man, though he lost his phone, counted himself fortunate to escape the ordeal unharmed, a sentiment echoed by residents who are increasingly concerned about the pattern of pedestrian targeted crimes in their community.
The police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they piece together this crime, part of a wider effort to clampdown on the spate of thefts that seems to surf along the edges of technology and opportunity, leeching off distracted citizens. In a statement obtained by SLMPD, authorities underscored the importance of community vigilance and reminded the public to report suspicious activities, they remain hopeful that the lost phone might ping its way back to the authorities, leading them to the culprits.
