Las Cruces authorities are amid a manhunt for a suspect following a tragic shooting at a local drive-in restaurant. The incident, which cost the life of a 20-year-old employee, occurred on a quiet evening turned sour by violence and despair. According to the City of Las Cruces, the shooting took place at the Sonic Drive-In located at 3471 Foothills Rd. around 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police and fire crews, upon arrival, discovered Benjamin Hernandez with at least one gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation quickly led to uncover that Hernandez, along with another employee, 21-year-old Luciano Roman Valente Frias, were involved in what seemed to initially be an argument or altercation inside the establishment. It escalated quickly and fatally when Frias reportedly went to use a handgun, discharging it and striking Hernandez. Soon after the incident, Frias is said to have fled the location on foot.

In their search for the alleged perpetrator, the Las Cruces Police Department has described Luciano Roman Valente Frias, noting he stands about 5-feet-5-inches tall and weighs approximately 130 pounds. Authorities are urgently appealing to the public for assistance in locating Frias and have encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident or Frias’ whereabouts to step forward.
