A Mankato man is facing serious charges following a child exploitation investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office has announced that Mitchell Ray Williams, 39, was indicted on multiple counts connected with creating and possessing child sexual abuse materials. The details of the case, sourced from court documents, reveal Williams' alleged activities took place through October 2024.
The investigation, which was spearheaded by the FBI, found that Williams had not only engaged minors in sexually explicit acts to produce these materials but also advertised their availability online. He has been officially charged with one count of production and attempted production of child pornography, one count of advertisement of child pornography, as well as one count of possession of child pornography. The accused was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings after his initial court appearance on February 5.
This case forms part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative launched in 2006 that actively combats child exploitation and abuse nationwide. The initiative coordinates efforts among various levels of law enforcement to efficiently locate and bring perpetrators to justice, as well as aid victims of such crimes. More information on the project can be found on the Department of Justice's website.
Appearing in U.S. District Court earlier today, March 11, Williams is awaiting his arraignment hearing. The case against him is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristian Weir. And while an indictment certainly raises alarms, it's critical to remember that it is, as the U.S. Attorney's Office points out, "merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
