A federal indictment has been handed down to a Mexican national residing in Salt Lake County, Utah, on charges involving drug and firearm crimes. The U.S. Attorney's Office disclosed that Luis Alberto Ramirez-Gonzalez, 28, also known by the alias Leonardo Gomez-Ahumada, was taken into custody following the discovery of heroin and a firearm at a residence in Magna, Utah, by law enforcement.
The investigation, which began in December 2024, culminated in a search warrant being executed on March 13, where detectives with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force seized about 300 grams of substance later confirmed to be heroin. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, on that same day, Ramirez-Gonzalez was found to illegally possess a Sig Sauer P320 handgun along with ammunition.
Ramirez-Gonzalez faces charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and being an alien in possession of a firearm. His initial court appearance on the indictment is set for March 28. Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah was the official to make this announcement.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, a broad initiative by the Department of Justice to intensively combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and to vigilantly guard communities against violent crime. The project aims to more effectively deploy resources from the OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood.
