The State of Tennessee is set for a change in its financial leadership, as the Department of Finance and Administration has named Michelle Hernandez as the incoming Chief of Accounts. Hernandez will step into the role following the retirement of Mike Corricelli, a veteran who, after almost three decades of service, is set to retire on March 31. This announcement was made by Commissioner Jim Bryson, as reported on the state's official website.

Corricelli's departure marks the end of an era, in which he is credited with having steadfastly guided the state's accounting team. Under his tenure, Tennessee has consistently been recognized for its adherence to superior government accounting and financial reporting practices. Commissioner Bryson remarked on the legacy Corricelli leaves behind, noting, "Mike has played a crucial role in the success of our shared services accounting model by leading our accounting team with a strong commitment to excellence." It's under his leadership that Tennessee has boasted receiving the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for an unprecedented 44 consecutive years.

Michelle Hernandez, preparing to assume her new position, comes with significant experience within the department. Since January 2015, she has served as Deputy Chief of Accounts, overseeing a wide array of statewide accounting functions. Her resume includes roles such as Assistant Director of Statewide Accounting, Financial Oversight Coordinator, and Legislative Auditor. With a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Murray State University, coupled with her CPA certification, her ascension to Chief of Accounts seems a natural progression of her career.

Bryson expressed confidence in Hernandez's ability to continue the department's legacy of excellence, stating, "I’ve had the opportunity to work with Michelle in the past, and I am excited to collaborate more closely with her as she brings her distinct leadership style to our Accounting Division." As she prepares to step into her new role, Hernandez brings not only her expertise but also a commitment to upholding the integrity and standards set forth by her predecessor.
