The Milpitas Police Department is currently dealing with a spree of copper wire thefts that have left parts of the city in darkness. As confirmed by the department's social media channels, thieves have been targeting utility poles and streetlights not only in Milpitas but also in surrounding areas. This has led to streets being plunged into darkness and creating what can be described as hazardous conditions for both the public and utility workers.
Residents are being called upon to help put an end to these incidents. The Milpitas Police urge anyone to report suspicious individuals or vehicles lurking around light poles. In a social media post, the Police cautioned, "Sometimes these thieves hide in plain sight. They may wear reflective vests to appear like legitimate utility or city workers. Don’t be fooled!" They recommend that if you witness someone tampering with wires or utility covers, to "trust your instincts and call 911."
