Minneapolis City Council has greenlit a new project destined to transform the aesthetic of the Hiawatha Avenue and Lake Street Bridge Pier, bringing together the functional with the creative. In a public announcement, Council Member Jason Chavez confirmed the council's decision to award a contract to the Minnesota Department of Transportation and GoodSpace Murals LLC, a local art collective known for its public art installations.
The project aims to quickly bring to life a two-dimensional artwork that will don the Hiawatha Lake Underpass, providing a splash of color and culture to what many consider a purely utilitarian space. In the words of Chavez from social media, “I’m excited to see this work come to fruition and to see the beautification of this intersection.”
The council's approval is a nod towards prioritizing community engagement through art, tapping into local talent to ensure that the mural reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Minneapolis. The mural is set to be designed by a team of artists including Greta McLain, Daniela Bianchini, Natchez Beaulieu, and Pablo Kalaka, all of whom are expected to bring their unique perspectives and styles to this collaborative piece.
