St. Louis motorists, take note: the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced overnight closures of northbound Interstate 55 for two consecutive weekends. The measure is necessary to facilitate the application of concrete to the driving surface of a new bridge spanning the Union Pacific Railroad, a segment located between River Des Peres and Loughborough. MoDOT stipulates that all scheduled work hinges on cooperative weather conditions.
On March 14, starting from the stroke of 10 p.m., northbound travelers on I-55 will find the thoroughfare obstructed at the Carondelet/River City Boulevard (Exit 202A). The detouring traffic, obliged to navigate a temporary path, will veer right onto River City Boulevard, trace it to Broadway, and from there, make a left to rejoin the interstate course. According to MoDOT, the route should restore two northbound lanes by the morning of March 15, at 9 a.m.
The second weekend, the overnight closure repeats. Beginning March 21, at 9 p.m., the northbound stretch will be sealed off once more at Exit 202A. Detoured traffic—expected to repeat the previous week's detour via River City Boulevard and Broadway—should return to I-55 with at least two northbound lanes available by 9 a.m. the following Saturday.
While these disruptions might upset the rhythm of night-time drivers, good news follows. MoDOT has reported that all southbound I-55 lanes, just south of River Des Peres, are already back in action. And in the upcoming week, they aim to reintroduce all northbound lanes south of Bayless, weather permitting. As spring emerges and temperatures rise, paving operations along I-55 between River Des Peres and Lindbergh looms close; thus, motorists should brace for sporadic lane closures continuing into 2026 as this work commences.
