The Metropolitan Police Department is calling on the community to assist in tracking down a vehicle linked to an attempted armed carjacking in Southeast D.C. The incident took place on the evening of March 4, in the 1200 block of Half Street, Southeast. Officers from the First District responded to a robbery report at around 9:21 p.m., according to the MPD.
As the victim was making their way to their car, they were accosted by suspects. Despite being armed with a handgun, the assailants demanded the victim hand over their property and car keys. The victim complied, but for reasons not disclosed, the suspects were unsuccessful in taking the vehicle and chose to flee. This resulted in them leaving the scene empty-handed, MPD detailed.
The suspect's vehicle was caught on surveillance footage. The images captured have since been released by authorities in hopes of obtaining leads. The MPD is appealing to anyone with knowledge about the vehicle or the failed carjacking to step forward.
While the MPD has released these images, they've also warned the public to take no action on their own. Anyone with information that could aid in the search is urged to contact the police by calling (202) 727-9099 or by texting the tip line at 50411. "The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in the District of Columbia," the MPD has stated.
