Residents of New Bedford, Massachusetts, are experiencing heightened anxiety following a violent attack at St. John’s Cemetery. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has prompted a police investigation after Jessica Blanchard reported being assaulted by an unknown man. According to an interview with Boston 25 News, Blanchard was visiting her grandparents' grave when she was struck in the face and aggressively asked for her wallet. The assailant reportedly continued to punch her and tore her shirt when she refused to comply.
"Thankfully, I was able to fight back and kick him off of me," Blanchard recounted in the WPRI-TV interview. The suspect fled the scene, and as of now, no arrests have been made. This cemetery, known as a place where locals walk their dogs and pay homage to the departed, has become the source of a community's unease, where the residents are often out, including a lot of kids living in this neighborhood.
The New Bedford Police Department is actively seeking any information related to the attack. Jessica Blanchard, the victim, highlighted the emotional toll the incident has taken on her, despite her physical injuries healing. "Mentally and emotionally, however, I am struggling," Blanchard told WPRI-TV. She emphasized the importance of personal safety over material possessions and encouraged others to trust their instincts.
The local community has been offering support to Blanchard in the wake of the attack, with residents and the New Bedford Police Department taking the assault seriously. "No one ever thinks something like this will happen to them," Blanchard remarked on the reality of experiencing such violence in a place that is supposed to be serene, as detailed by WPRI-TV. The management of St. Luke's Hospital, where they treated her injuries, is thanked by her and anyone with knowledge about the attacker is urged to contact authorities.
