Residents traveling in New Orleans' eastbound lanes on Morrison Road will need to take a detour for the foreseeable future. The City of New Orleans has announced that the Benson Canal Bridge will remain closed to eastbound traffic. Following an assessment of the bridge's structural integrity, the closure has been deemed necessary to ensure the safety of citizens.
With plans for a replacement bridge on the horizon as a part of the Morrison Road Project, city officials expect to open the project for bids early in the summer. Meanwhile, commuters will need to reroute their eastward travels via Crowder Boulevard to either the I-10 Service Road or Hayne Boulevard.
While the closure predominately impacts eastbound traffic, the city has established a provisional arrangement to allow two-way traffic on the eastbound side of Morrison Road between Bundy Road and the Benson Canal Bridge. However, this arrangement comes with a caveat – it's reserved exclusively for nearby residents on the south side of Morrison Road.
Public cooperation is requested as the city continues to navigate this logistical challenge. "We appreciate your patience and understanding as the City works to assess and address these safety concerns," the statement reads.
