Starting on Monday, March 17, a new pilot program will kick off to tackle the notorious congestion around Honolulu Harbor. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT), in collaboration with Young Brothers (YB), is set to launch a system where trucks can pre-check their equipment before heading to YB's facility at Piers 39-40. This initiative is set to take place on Mondays and Thursdays between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., aiming to streamline the flow of traffic along the critical Nimitz Highway corridor.
"Nimitz Highway is among the top four locations for truck volume in the state with between 4,500 to 5,000 trucks driving this corridor daily", said Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen in a statement obtained by HDOT's press release. Sniffen also noted the goal is to improve the flow of goods, safety, and traffic for everyone traveling this key corridor. HDOT and YB's new pre-check point will operate at the HDOT Sand Island weigh station, positioned before the Sand Island bridge, providing a "fast flow" lane for approved trucks to enter YB's facility via Libby Gate on Auiki Street.
The pre-check process requires motor carriers transporting containers from either Matson or Pasha terminals to undergo inspection at the Sand Island weigh station. Trucks that pass the inspection will then be allowed to enter YB's facility with greater ease, bypassing the usual check-in at YB's Nimitz Gate, which will not offer check-ins during the pilot hours. Those trucks that do not pass will be queued in an area off Auiki Street. To further alleviate traffic, the City and County of Honolulu will restrict parking along the makai curb of Auiki Street from Kalihi Street to Libby Street Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Chris Martin, vice president of operations for Young Brothers, mentioned, "Minimizing delays and improving access to our facilities will help create a more efficient and reliable experience for our trucking partners and customers." According to an interview by HDOT, Martin also stated that this joint effort is an attempt to support a smoother cargo flow, which benefits businesses and communities across Hawai‘i. The pilot program's progress will be closely monitored by HDOT and YB to assess its efficacy in reducing traffic congestion and improving overall traffic flow in the area. All truckers and YB customers have reportedly been alerted to the upcoming changes regarding access to YB facilities.
