The City has detailed some upcoming nighttime lane closures on the Upper Spring Garden Street Bridge. According to Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi, as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge Rehabilitation Project, a single lane will shut down from 9:00PM to 5:00AM starting tomorrow and continuing on weekdays for two weeks. These closures will allow crews to pour a concrete deck section of the MLK Drive Bridge, which sits just beneath.
The lane closure, which was announced on Philadelphia's official website, will involve flaggers who'll be directing traffic on the bridge that spans between the I-76 On/Off Ramps and Art Museum Drive.
Phila.gov has outlined the MLK Drive Bridge Project details, which are extensive. Demolition and removal of the old concrete deck and barriers, and construction of a new deck, barriers, and railing. There's also a facelift for the superstructure and substructure, a fresh coat of paint for the steel girders, roadway approach attention, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and various other improvements on the docket.
The endeavor of rebuilding the bridge has been awarded to Haines & Kibblehouse, Inc., with the wrap-up expected by fall of 2025. With a hefty price tag of $20.1 million, the bill for this infrastructure upgrade is being picked up in full by Federal Dollars. The Department of Streets emphasized its commitment to reducing traffic headaches during the construction but suggests those driving in the area should plan alternate routes.
