Nine individuals have been detained following a thwarted smuggling attempt at sea by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO). In a recent interception off the coast of California, the suspects were caught attempting to cross the Maritime Boundary Line (MBL) under the cover of darkness. This incident highlights the continuous efforts to safeguard U.S. borders and the international boundary lines that demarcate them.
On Tuesday, an AMO Multi-Role Enforcement Aircraft detected a panga boat stealthily maneuvering toward the MBL. The aircraft's crew watched the vessel, working with an AMO Coastal Interceptor Vessel (CIV) to prepare for intervention. The panga, insistent on its path, eventually crossed the MBL shortly after midnight, which prompted the enforcement aircraft to direct the CIV for an interception. Despite multiple efforts to halt the boat, its crew refused to comply, leading agents to fire disabling rounds, effectively bringing the vessel to a stop, as per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Contained within the panga were nine adult males, with four having hailed from Brazil, two from Mexico, two from Nepal, and one from China. The group was escorted to shore and handed over for processing. These arrests showcase AMO's mission to counter security threats along the country's borders and in maritime zones actively patrolled to prevent illicit activities.
The San Diego Air and Marine Branch has since taken the panga into custody for violation of 8 USC 1324, a statute about the smuggling of aliens. With its fleet of aircraft and marine vessels, AMO continues to operate nationwide, including territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization remains dedicated to enforcing laws and regulations relating to border security and facilitating legal migration and trade.
