The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated following a recent officer-involved shooting, according to an announcement from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. The incident, which took place on Monday around 2 p.m., began when two deputies attempted to stop a motorcyclist for traffic violations in Fort Collins.

The adult male suspect, riding an off-road bike, chose to not comply and instead made his way onto a bike path in Edora Park. The deputies, mounted on agency motorcycles, continued to pursue him. The situation escalated when the suspect dismounted and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, prompting the officers to engage.

As reported by Larimer County, after the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was on the ground and failed to comply with the deputies’ commands. Concerned about the suspect's proximity to his weapon, deputies formed a contact team and deployed a K9 unit that successfully pulled the individual away from the firearm.

Local law enforcement administered first aid to the wounded suspect until he could be transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. One deputy was also shot during the confrontation but is recovering after receiving medical attention. As the investigation into the shooting continues, CIRT has called for witnesses to step forward and offer statements to Detective Hooper at 970-962-2032. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868 or their website.
