Keeping Ohio's waterways sparkling, marina owners, operators, and boating aficionados were spotlighted at the 9th Annual Ohio Marina Conference last Thursday, where the spotlight shone on those who have championed clean aquatic avenues for a remarkable twenty years, thanks to the Ohio Clean Marinas Program. The event, meticulously organized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Coastal Management and Division of Parks and Watercraft in collaboration with the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, doubled to celebrate the two-decade milestone since the program's genesis.

In recognition of their exemplary efforts, Geneva Marina scooped up the Marina of the Year title for its dedication to environmental stewardship; Firelands Local, LLC nabbed the Partner of the Year honor for their unwavering support to the initiative. Various certification awards were bestowed upon those marinas that had maintained and elevated their eco-friendly standards, according to a statement obtained by the ODNR website, putting a spotlight on the hard work of the industry professionals committed to sustainable practices.

The tiers of certification, which include Base, Gold, and the coveted Platinum, recognize the various levels of environmental practices adopted by the marinas, those reaching Platinum have implemented all possible measures, reflecting a deep-rooted commitment to environmental health and responsible boating. This year's honorees include the Alum Creek Sailing Association and Hoover Reservoir Marina, both receiving Gold certifications, while Sawmill Creek Marina was accredited with the Base certification.

Amidst critical discussions on marine insurance, abandoned vessel management, electric codes, and the undeniably rising tide of electric boats, attendees at the event also reveled in valuable networking opportunities. Here they were, marina professionals at the very nexus of their field, convening to exchange ideas and fortify their resolve for a greener future. In this future, our waterways aren't just thoroughfares for leisure but arteries for a flourishing ecosystem, as underscored in a gathering that recognized longstanding commitment, denoted by marinas like Beaver Park Marina and Cedar Point Marina, which have unflinchingly upheld their Clean Marina status for two solid decades.

With its roots stretching back to 2004, backed by NOAA funding, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program stands as a template for marine environmental stewardship, harnessing the Ohio Sea Grant's affiliation with The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, as well as the collective strength of 34 Sea Grant programs. This is a testament to a greater understanding that our natural resources aren't just amenities to be enjoyed. Still, these are treasures to be guarded zealously, for Ohio and its waterways are not mere backdrops to our lives but, indeed, the very sustenance of them.
