Oklahoma City is set to take center stage in the ever-popular game of real estate and fortune as it gets its own customized version of MONOPOLY, complete with local landmarks and attractions. As News 9 reported, MONOPOLY: Oklahoma City Edition will replace the traditional game locations with city-specific ones like Bricktown, the State Capitol, and Frontier City. Mayor David Holt expressed pride in the inclusion of the city's highlights in the board game, stating, "We are honored to have our great city represented in this iconic board game."
This Friday, Mayor Holt and Zac Craig, President of Visit Oklahoma City, will celebrate the announcement alongside the creators of the new edition and a special appearance by Mr. Monopoly himself; the game is not just a nod to the city's attractions but also includes Community Chest and Chance cards that reflect life in Oklahoma City, according to OKC FOX. In a move that brings the public into the game's development, KFOR reports that the city is asking for citizen input to decide on the places to be featured in the game.
Furthermore, the inclusion of local businesses in the MONOPOLY: Oklahoma City Edition is being welcomed, offering them a chance to sponsor different properties, which Katie Hubbard of Top Trumps USA, the game's maker, described as helpful in bringing the game to life; she told OKC FOX, "We are very grateful to the local business community for supporting this project as it helps us bring this game to life."
With the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel, and Scissortail Park slated to be featured, the game aims to showcase the diverse cultural and historical landmarks that define the city's identity, Mayor Holt shared enthusiasm for this project, saying in an interview with KFOR, “There’s only one Monopoly and there has never been a true Monopoly for Oklahoma City until now and so that is exciting.” The move shows an effort to celebrate Oklahoma City's sense of community through the universal language of a cherished board game, solidifying its place in the hearts of both locals and fans abroad.
