The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) recently updated the public on ongoing improvements to the H-1 Freeway. As the island's main artery continues to see construction, residents are bracing for disruptions. A variety of projects are currently underway and the schedules for these have been outlined by HDOT — a clear sign for commuters to plan their travel with caution.

One significant project involves the H-1 Pearl City and Waimalu Viaduct. The department notified that deck demolition, along with concrete work is ongoing on the H-1 eastbound between the Hālawa Interchange and the H-1/H-2 split. Work is done on weeknights, Tuesday through Friday and extended over the weekends. The completion has been pushed back to May 2027, marking a delay from the original March 2027 deadline.

Meanwhile, the H-1 Salt Lake Rehabilitation project, which includes paving and guardrail work, sees eastbound closures from 8 p.m. Friday to early Monday morning, and similar timing applies to the westbound direction. The completion date for this project has also been revised, now set for May instead of the earlier expected March 2025 finish line.

Further along, the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct is getting its own facelift with concrete deck and roadway improvements. These repairs are scheduled Tuesday through Monday nights, with a break on Monday evenings. Due to extra repair needs found in the deck surface, the estimated completion date has been pushed to August, diverging from the previous June 2025 estimation.

Another project to note is the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvement Project, where the eastbound freeway is being widened and new retaining walls are being constructed. This has necessitated the closure of two lanes within the project limits during the night from Monday to Friday. Additionally, day work affects Richard Lane and Gulick Avenue for utility relocations. A key part of this project will be the installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge over Gulick Avenue, slated to begin in September 2025. The overall completion date for these eastbound improvements is targeted for January 2027.

HDOT has urged motorists to stay vigilant for traffic control signs and barriers, and to manage their commute schedules in advance. To help with traffic safety, special duty police officers are also deployed at work sites. It is important to remember that all of these roadwork schedules are subject to change based on the weather conditions at hand.
