A tragic incident occurred yesterday evening when a pedestrian was struck by a freight train near The Big Y Supermarket in Pittsfield. The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the emergency call at approximately 6:22 p.m., alongside the Pittsfield Fire Department and Action Ambulance. In a statement released via Facebook, authorities detailed that two males were seen entering onto the train tracks and began to walk westward when the accident occurred.
According to the police account, the train operator spotted the individuals and immediately attempted to alert them with the train's horn. One managed to quickly clear himself from the path of the oncoming train, while the other was less fortunate to not meet the same escape. The collision resulted in life-threatening injuries, and the victim was transported to BMC by Action Ambulance. Sorrowfully, despite the efforts made, the victim's injuries were too severe and led to their death.
The identity of the individual who was lost has been withheld, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities are actively seeking the second individual who left the scene before emergency services arrived, and who might be able to assist with the investigation.
