A recent high-speed chase involving a DUI driver in Pierce County reached a dangerous climax as deputies deployed stop sticks and performed multiple Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuvers to apprehend the suspect. This harrowing incident began last Sunday when a driver under the influence collided with a parked vehicle outside a residence. According to a social media post by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, the situation escalated quickly as the inebriated driver attempted to assault the concerned homeowners with their vehicle after crashing.
The chaotic pursuit continued on Pacific Ave. South as authorities chased the suspect northbound from 176th St. E. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department detailed the extensive attempts to stop the driver, noting, "Even with a successful stop stick deployment that popped all four tires, the DUI driver continued to drive on the wheels." Following this, two failed PIT attempts led to a third successful effort that disabled the vehicle. However, the driver's compliance did not come smoothly or quickly as they resisted arrest, prompting deputies to employ both a taser and pepper spray before taking the driver into custody.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department used the incident to remind the public of the dangers associated with impaired driving. "A second DUI shows us the dangers of drugs being used while driving. Please don’t drink or do drugs when driving!"
