At this Wednesday's meeting, the Board of Supervisors made several noteworthy declarations that reflect a commitment to professionalism, justice, and equality in our community. In one of the decisions, as reported by Pinal County's official government website, March 12 has been officially designated as Procurement Professionals' Day. This aligns with National Procurement Month, highlighting the dedication and expertise of those who manage the purchasing processes within government. Angie Woods, Director of Budget and Finance, stood with her team—Lorina Gillette, Kristen Sidote-Grieco, Maegen Queen, Diane Mendoza, and Eric Zander—as they were honored by the proclamation.
Furthermore, in recognition of a bedrock principle of our justice system, the board proclaimed March 17-21 as "Public Defense Week." The observance marks the 62nd anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, which underscored that all defendants, regardless of financial status, are entitled to professional legal representation as per the 6th Amendment of the Constitution. Adam Adinolfi, Trial Team Division Director, joined by Cathryn Whalen, Deputy County Manager and Director of Public Defense Services; Attorney Kevin Heade; and Kate Milewski, Public Defender, was present to accept the honor.
Finally, stepping forward into April, the Board approved a Proclamation recognizing the month as "Fair Housing Month." This annual observation not only promotes awareness of fair housing practices but also commemorates the pivotal Fair Housing Act of 1968, a law that serves as a bulwark against housing discrimination. Rolanda Cephas, Director, along with Marshell Williams, Administrative Specialist from the Pinal County Housing Department, were featured in the announcement as advocates for this enduring cause.
