In Polk County, a sting operation targeting the illegal sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors has led to the arrest of a store clerk accused of selling tobacco to an underage customer. The Polk County Sheriff's Office conducted the operation as part of their ongoing efforts to crack down on such sales in line with state laws, detailed in a report by the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The initiative, dubbed Operation Pop-Top, saw the participation of a local high school student enlisted through the Cadet 1000 program, which paves the way for students interested in law enforcement careers. The student, who is 15, made attempts to buy alcohol and tobacco at several Winter Haven stores yesterday. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the teen was turned away at three stores when trying to buy alcohol.

However, the undercover sting took a turn at the Blazen Blvd. store, where Beatrice Destin, a 24-year-old sales clerk, failed to verify the student’s age and sold tobacco to the minor. This oversight led to Destin’s arrest and she now faces a charge of Selling Tobacco to a Person under 21 Years, which is classified as a misdemeanor.

Stepping up enforcement in this area appears to be a top priority for the local law enforcement. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd stated, "It is imperative that store clerks are checking IDs and refusing to sell alcohol, tobacco, or kratom, to anyone who is not of age. We are absolutely serious about enforcing this in Polk County, and we perform these checks routinely as a means to ensure that all stores are compliant with state law," according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office statement.
