Today marked a significant shift in the landscape of North Carolina's legal scene as Russ Ferguson took on the mantle of United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina (WDNC). Appointed by Attorney General Pamela Bondi, Ferguson was sworn in by United States District Judge Frank D. Whitney in a ceremony that formalized his position as the region's chief federal law enforcement officer, U.S. Attorney's Office WDNC.
Ferguson's career trajectory has been nothing short of exemplary. With 16 years of substantial legal experience under his belt, he first cut his teeth as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, trying 28 cases to verdict. Prior to his latest appointment, he sharpened his legal acumen as a partner at international law firm Womble Bond Dickinson. There, he not only led the firm's complex litigation group but also represented clients in a slew of high-profile and complicated legal endeavors, earning him accolades and acknowledgement from his peers and several legal communities.
Representing the United States in all civil and criminal litigations within the district is a hefty responsibility, one that extends over 32 counties and includes the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, highlighting the district's cultural and societal complexity. Ferguson will guide nearly 100 federal prosecutors and support personnel in his new role, ensuring that the scales of justice are balanced and the law is upheld with rigor and fairness.
Apart from his professional duties, Ferguson has shown a steadfast commitment to pro bono work, for which the Mecklenburg County Bar honored him with an award for Best Individual Attorney. His name has found its way to the rolls of Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, and North Carolina Business Elite, not to mention his reception of the Charlotte Business Journal's Forty Under Forty Award—testaments to his legal prowess and his influence both within and beyond the courtroom.
Ferguson is praised not only for his legal skills but also for his insights and communication. He speaks at local and national events and has published numerous articles on civil and criminal law, highlighting his commitment to legal education.
