The METRO Gold Line is gearing up to make its grand debut on March 22, marking a significant expansion in the region's transit network. The new bus rapid transit (BRT) line, which will run between downtown Saint Paul and Woodbury, is the state's premiere route, featuring a dedicated roadway for buses, as reported by Metro Transit. Offering frequent service from early morning till past midnight, this line aims to streamline the commute across the I-94 corridor, connecting residents with key destinations such as jobs and services.
Enhanced with features like heated stations, lighting, ticket machines, and real-time signage, the Gold Line is set to roll out with regular service. Later this year, the line is expected to upgrade its fleet with five electric buses, adding not only capacity but also a greener alternative to the mix. According to the Metro Council's recent update, the B Line is also launching on June 14, promising improved service along the busy Route 21 corridor from downtown Saint Paul to Uptown Minneapolis and further on to France Avenue.
The growth in transit-oriented development is all part of a larger strategy. The region reported that between 2009 and 2023, $19.2 billion in development projects – 38% of the region’s total permitted development – fell within half a mile of these high-frequency transit corridors. With this emphasis on transit accessibility, nearly 60,000 multifamily housing units were greenlit in these areas. What's more, over half of all affordable housing built in the region from 2014 to 2023 was situated conveniently near high-frequency transit locations, accommodating over 10,710 units, which are vital for those in need of them.
In terms of achieving equitable access, the transit network plays a fundamental role by lessening economic divides and bringing opportunities closer to historically marginalized groups. The upcoming E Line opening in December furthers this effort, running from Westgate Station near the University of Minnesota to Southdale Transit Center in Edina. This initiative is seen as a crucial step toward realizing the "Imagine 2050" goals: a dynamic, resilient, equitable, inclusive region actively leading the charge on climate action through efficient public transport and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Residents are invited to celebrate the Gold Line's launch at the Woodlane Park & Ride in Woodbury and the Sun Ray Park & Ride in Saint Paul on March 22. The council promises a family-friendly opening with activities and entertainment. Rides on the Gold Line will be offered for free until March 28, says Metro Transit.
