Calling all eligible low-income taxpayers in the Salem area: it's time to potentially claim thousands of dollars in federal and state income tax credits. The Oregon Department of Revenue is stepping in to offer free tax filing assistance at the Salem Public Library. On April 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., volunteers will be on hand at the library, located at 585 Liberty Street SE, to aid residents in utilizing IRS Direct File and Direct File Oregon.

It's a significant opportunity for those earning up to $66,819 in 2024, as families might be eligible to receive a maximum federal Earned Income Tax Credit of $7,830, along with a maximum Oregon Earned Income Credit of $940. The IRS has estimated that, in Oregon, a full 25 percent of taxpayers who could claim these credits simply do not. This event is designed to help change that and to directly assist taxpayers to quickly and freely file their returns.

According to a statement made by Oregon's newsroom, over 13 percent of Marion County tax returns took advantage of these credits in tax year 2022. Yet, it seems many more could still reap these financial benefits. The Oregon Kids Credit, which could add up to as much as $5,000, is another potential boon for those who qualify.

Taxpayers looking to participate in this helpful event should come prepared. The IRS recommends using their Eligibility Checker to confirm qualification for IRS Direct File, and individuals should set up an IRS online account beforehand. Visitors are encouraged to bring identification documents, income, and tax documents, and optionally, last year's tax return and banking information for direct deposit. The department has made available a range of instructional videos and materials on their website to ensure taxpayers are prepared to take full advantage of the free service.

However, not all taxpayers will be able to use the IRS Direct File service, particularly those with dividends on Form 1099-DIV or with capital gains or losses. Those individuals can still find other free filing options and assistance sites through the IRS agency's website, ensuring all eligible taxpayers have the opportunity to file.
