The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) recently celebrated the graduation of a dozen new police officers from its training academy. These officers have undergone an exhaustive six-month training regimen to prepare for their roles in safeguarding Utah’s capital, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Throughout the course of the program, these recruits engaged in over hundreds of hours of instruction, spanning areas such as defensive tactics, firearms, crisis intervention, and even emergency vehicle operations. They were tested and evaluated to meet the high expectations of modern policing, in a concerted effort to form officers well-versed in the complexity of their duties, with both high pressure simulations and theoretical insights.
Adding to their certifications from the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), each graduate has fulfilled approximately 150 extra hours in specialized training, a curriculum meticulously tailored to the unique needs of the Salt Lake community. "These officers were continuously evaluated and tested to meet the highest standards of policing," as per the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Now that academy training is finished, the fresh batch of officers is set to engage in rigorous field training. Paired with seasoned Field Training Officers (FTOs) for a 16-week period, these new officers are poised to refine their approaches through direct, hands-on community engagement. The department has underscored its ongoing commitment to fostering officers who genuinely reflect, and therefore can effectively uphold, its core values of "Character, Compassion, Commitment to the Community, Communication, and Courage."
