San Francisco's City Attorney David Chiu clamped down on unlawful enterprises across the city, shutting down three gambling spots and two rogue nightclubs that brought trouble to the southeastern neighborhoods. City departments pitched in with enforcement actions, while property owners were hit with demands to quash the illegal and rowdy ruckuses sprouting under their roofs, as per the City Attorney’s Office.
In a display of swift compliance, the implicated property owners have bowed to pressure. Chiu appreciated their swift action and the "real relief" this brings to neighbors who put up with the chaos caused by these dens and clubs, and the City Attorney affirmed that “our Code Enforcement Team worked hard to ensure San Francisco is a safe and enjoyable place to live,” having been quoted by the City Attorney’s Office. The police raids seized gambling machines and, in some cases, firearms and drugs, illustrating the gravity of the illicit activities at properties like the storied spaces of 57 Leland Ave and 5530 Mission Street, both caught with illegal slot machines and the later with evidence of gunfire.
At the residential address 1201 Cayuga Avenue, the chaos went a step further, with an armed robbery leading to SFPD action and the subsequent discovery of gambling devices and meth. The implicated owner did what was needed: eviction, as Chiu's team wielded the Red Light Abatement Law like a sword. Meanwhile, at 3261 Mission Street and 4461 Mission Street, where night owls congregated for illicit after-hours entertainment, noise complaints, and stubborn tenants met the hard end of the law, and the parties have ceased; one owner went the extra mile hiring a manager to watch for future compliance.
