San Francisco's recent string of shoplifting incidents has led to charges against Colton Sheppard, a 36-year-old who has previously been ordered to stay away from the CVS store he allegedly stole from. Yesterday, Sheppard pleaded not guilty to all charges, as reported by the District Attorney's Office.
Sheppard is accused of two instances of petty theft, two breaches of a stay-away order, and one act of shoplifting, according to a press release from District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. These incidents took place at a CVS located at 399 Geary Street, a location that Sheppard was previously instructed to avoid. "Routine, habitual, theft from our retail establishments will only be curbed when those who commit these acts understand that there will be consequences," Jenkins stated, per the District Attorney's Office. Court records show that on Sunday, Sheppard, while on supervised probation for a prior offense, allegedly entered the CVS and stole merchandise valued at $65.06.
San Francisco Police officers were able to locate and arrest Sheppard shortly after the reported shoplifting event, who had the stolen items. Following the arrest, investigators identified Sheppard as a suspect in additional thefts from the same CVS store on February 4 and November 17, 2024, through surveillance footage review.
As Sheppard awaits the preliminary hearing set for March 26, he remains in custody with no bail set.
