The legal community in St. Louis is mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant, Assistant Circuit Attorney Srikant Chigurupati, who died unexpectedly yesterday. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office released a statement honoring their colleague, who had been with the office since June 2021.
After earning his law degree from Washington University School of Law, Chigurupati spent several years as a Public Defender, unwavering to advocate for those he represented—first in Hannibal, and then in St. Louis. He worked in various capacities, including the trial office, the appellate office, and the capital defense division. It was a testament to his commitment to justice that he switched roles to serve at the Circuit Attorney's Office, where he handled an array of criminal cases, including many homicide matters.
"Srikant was a respected and beloved member of our team and will be missed," read a poignant line from the office's official notice. His work in the legal sphere was far-reaching, impacting lives on both sides of the courtroom. Chigurupati wasn't just influential in his official capacity; colleagues remember him as a devoted family man, a proud sports enthusiast, and the creator of renowned jambalaya dishes, as per the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
Outside of the courtroom, he harbored a fierce loyalty to St. Louis sports teams and found joy in the flavors of his kitchen, an affection likely only surpassed by the love for his family. His care extended greatly to his parents, brother, and especially his niece and nephew, who he treated as though they were his own children. Those who knew him admired the way he seamlessly managed to always be there for the people he loved, no matter the demands of his important work.
As the Circuit Attorney's Office and the larger St. Louis community recognize Chigurupati's significant contributions, many reflect on the profound personal and professional void his passing leaves. He was a person who dedicated his life to upholding the principles of justice, while simultaneously ensuring that the bonds of family and community remained strong. The Circuit Attorney’s Office's tribute to Srikant Chigurupati is a solemn reminder of the impact one individual can have both in and outside the walls of a courtroom.
