In the early hours of Saturday, an officer-involved shooting raised concerns in a neighborhood near N. Kingshighway after a police chase ended with an alleged felon being critically wounded. The incident began with a License Plate Reader alert for a vehicle involved in felony theft and ended in a dramatic crash and a flurry of police activity.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported officers from District 5 trying to stop the suspect's vehicle at Page Boulevard and Walton Avenue before it fled, resulting in a chase. After the vehicle crashed in the alley of the 5000 block of Kingshighway, two female passengers, 42 and 34 years old, stayed inside the vehicle as instructed. But the male driver, in his mid-50s, attempted to escape on foot and was later found by an officer in a nearby yard. During the apprehension, the police department's statement provides that "the officer discharged his weapon and the man was struck in his torso."
The injured man received medical attention and was last listed in critical/stable condition following the incident. Officers also recovered a firearm from inside the vehicle. While details remain sparse, no officers were reported injured during the confrontation and the officer involved has 2 and a half years of service with the department.
Amid the community's unsettled murmur, questions surface regarding the sequence of events and the justification for the use of force. In response to these concerns, the Force Investigation Unit has taken up the case, wrangling with the task to unearth the truth and dispense clarity. According to a release from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the unit is conducting a thorough investigation to evaluate the actions taken and the circumstances that led to the discharge of the officer’s weapon.
