Following months of repairs in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene's destructive path, State Route 36 in Unicoi County, Tennessee, has officially reopened. The pivotal route, which saw a 6.4-mile section out of commission since the hurricane struck in September 2024, resumed traffic flow on Tuesday, easing transportation woes for local commuters and businesses, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
The reopening marks a significant milestone in the state’s recovery efforts, as the TDOT informed that before this, 44 out of the 49 closed sections of state and local routes had been restored to service. Efforts included the repairing of 12 separate sites along the State Route 36 corridor itself. Guardrails were installed, rock buttresses were constructed, and slopes were reinforced with soil nail walls.
Not only does the resumption of traffic on State Route 36 demonstrate the resilience of Tennessee’s infrastructure, but it also represents a strategic victory for logistics and the economy within the region. TDOT advises, however, that motorists remain cautious when traveling through the area, as ongoing maintenance work means the presence of workers and potential delays are still a possibility. The primary contractor responsible for the extensive repairs, Summers-Taylor, Inc., continues to collaborate with state authorities to ensure the roadway remains safe for all users.
