Motorists in East Tennessee are seeing signs of recovery as State Route 81, linking Unicoi and Washington Counties, is now open after months of closure due to Hurricane Helene's wrath. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the crucial roadway was made accessible again yesterday, following extensive repairs necessitated by the storm's damage in September 2024. The much-needed restoration included the construction of rock buttresses, guardrail installation, grade work, and the final touch of surface paving.
The reopening of this 1.1-mile stretch is no small relief for locals, the reopened State Route 81 is expected to significantly improve the daily commute for over 5,400 vehicles which had been taking detours adding an extra hour of driving time. Tennessee Department of Transportation's recent announcement comes as a part of the ongoing efforts to rebuild and restore the state's infrastructure in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which had previously shut down 49 sections of state and local routes in the region.
While SR 81's doors are once again open to traffic, TDOT warns that maintenance work isn't completely finished. Motorists are being urged to drive with an added measure of caution while workers continue to finesse the roadway. Baker’s Construction Services, Inc., stands as the contractor behind the work on this particular project, and their hands have been full ensuring that the construction follows through to completion.
As of now, out of the 49 affected routes, a promising total of 43 have been successfully reopened to the public. This progress marks significant headway since the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene last year.
