Two students at Washington High School were arrested after an unloaded gun and separate bullets were found in their backpacks, FOX 10 Phoenix reported. The Glendale Union High School District indicated that the school administration discovered the weapon before school began, and Phoenix Police took over the investigation subsequently.
The district promptly confiscated the items and took swift disciplinary measures for the students who now face charges related to possessing a firearm on a school campus, the police found the weapon was stolen from Glendale and the incident, unfortunately, marked the second such event at Washington High School this year and parents have been notified, "We want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on campus," school officials emphasized in a letter to parents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Earlier this year, on January 16, another gun was found in a student's backpack at the same school, this is concerning given that both incidents occurred within a short span raising questions about security measures and the students' awareness of the implications of their actions, as a parent shared with 12News, "This is the second such incident that Washington High School has had to face this year," pointing to a growing trend that school administrators and law enforcement are no doubt keen to address.
