Early this morning, a pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting on northbound I-75, causing the thoroughfare to shut down until approximately 7:45 a.m., local sources reported. According to The Enquirer, the pursuit began after West Chester Township police were alerted to the stolen vehicle by a license plate reader at the intersection of Princeton Glendale Road and Provident Drive.
The chase, which spanned about six miles, was discontinued at the Hamilton County line as Lockland and other departments took up the search leading up to the confrontation and subsequent shooting near the Lockland split. Multiple police departments searched, and the suspect was eventually located walking along the interstate.
Lockland's Police Chief Michael Ott reported that the suspect, encountered by a Lockland officer, was "refusing to obey commands" and was holding something in his hands, leading the officer first to use a Taser that had no effect. "The officer reported the suspect had something in his hands and was refusing to obey commands," Ott stated, as obtained by The Enquirer.
Ultimately, the officer shot the suspect in the chest, and though medical assistance was rendered, the man did not survive; the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident, authorities' pursuit of the stolen vehicle, and the following series of events that concluded in a fatality on the interstate bring to the forefront the high-stakes nature of such confrontations. In a press release, Chief Ott further detailed that the officer "had to resort to his firearm" after non-lethal means proved ineffective, as cited by WCPO.
The identity of the officer involved has not been released at this time, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is carrying out an in-progress investigation to ascertain the full sequence of events and justification for the use of lethal force in this lamentable conclusion to the vehicle pursuit on I-75.
