In a recent incident of unsettling online activity, Tampa Police have taken into custody a local Plant High School student after she made a threat against her school on social media. Rilyn Notbohm, aged 15, on Monday, declared, "That's it, I’m shooting my school up" in a post, which led to her swift arrest later that night, according to City of Tampa.
While the motive behind Notbohm's message, identified as a dispute with a friend, might frame the nature of the incident in less ominous tones, the ramifications of her words carry weight in a society ever-vigilant against school violence. Informed detectives, expressing their concern, were told by Notbohm of her agitation stemming from personal conflict.
The charge landed against the teenager is severe, a felony count of written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, a firm reminder of the zero-tolerance stance that educational institutions and law enforcement agencies maintain regarding threats of this nature.
Chief Lee Bercaw spoke to the gravity of such matters, emphasizing the implications of seemingly flippant comments. "Anyone who thinks making a ‘joke’ about shooting up a school is harmless is gravely mistaken," he told City of Tampa. He further stressed the importance of community vigilance, "We take the safety of our students and staff extremely seriously. I want to thank the community for promptly reporting threats and working with our dedicated officers and detectives to help keep our children safe."
