As the revelry of Mardi Gras 2025 swept through New Orleans, the Transportation Security Administration's Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (LE/FAMS) and their explosive detection K9 teams were deployed to bolster safety. These teams joined a wide interagency law enforcement effort to secure the festivities, which drew crowds from across the nation and the world.
With the U.S. Department of Homeland Security pinpointing Mardi Gras as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) One event, indicative of its high national significance, the TSA stepped up its game. Federal Air Marshals (FAMs) were spotted not only safeguarding air travel but also extending their watchful presence to ground transportation hubs like the Union Passenger Terminal, catering to Amtrak and Greyhound users, and also at a local ferry terminal. Used by Amtrak and Greyhound, the Union Passenger Terminal received additional security support according to the TSA's announcement.
In the words of Supervisory Air Marshal in Charge Noel Curtin, "Federal Air Marshals protect the nation's transportation system and provide law enforcement augmentation to all modes of transportation as well as to national security priorities." These statements were part of his media address on Monday morning, shedding light on the FAMs' crucial role during high-profile events, as per TSA.
Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) operations were especially noteworthy, delivering unpredictability to the mix—deploying at times in coordination with local law enforcement that were anything but expected. Designed to deter and neutralize potential terror threats, these operations were bolstered by the canine teams. These teams, adept at sniffing out danger, are clearing venues and inspecting parade floats for explosive substances. Highly mobile and responsive, these teams can be quickly directed to respond to threats in transport systems throughout downtown New Orleans, and all while keeping a low profile.
The display of the TSA's canine unit's effectiveness highlights the agency's commitment to prioritizing the risk of explosives in transportation systems. Canine teams, both local and from afar, are an efficient and critical layer in the security matrix according to the TSA.
