On a day significant for mental health advocacy, Sen. Jo Anna Dossett of Tulsa was recognized as a 2025 Mental Health Champion by the Oklahoma Coalition of Advocates for Behavioral Health; the announcement was made during their annual My Mind Matters Day at the Capitol last Wednesday, where leaders across the board are celebrated for their commitment to mental health reform and advocacy. Dossett, a Democrat known for her dedication to mental health issues, was honored alongside fellow legislators Sen. Todd Gollihare, Rep. Daniel Pae, and Rep. Melissa Provenzano, who have all played key roles in progressing mental health legislation in Oklahoma.
In an address to the assembly, Dossett expressed her gratitude: "It’s an honor to be named alongside my colleagues from both chambers of the Legislature and both sides of the aisle today," as reported by the official Senate press release. She emphasized the collective efforts made in advancing bills designed to destigmatize mental health issues and promote parity between mental health treatment and other forms of healthcare, while also acknowledging the ongoing work ahead. The honorees collectively lead the Legislature’s Mental Health Caucus, known for its bipartisan efforts to advance pro-mental health legislation.
The Oklahoma Coalition of Advocates for Behavioral Health, comprised of a diverse group of organizations from across the state, holds interests rooted in mental health and addiction, aiming to influence policy and public opinion through collaboration and partnership. Their day at the Capitol not only serves as a ceremony for recognizing achievements but also for fostering direct communication between law-makers and constituents, grounding the legislative push in the realities of citizens' challenges with mental health and substance abuse.
