DeKalb County became the backdrop for a domestic dispute turned violent this past weekend, resulting in two people being shot and two arrests. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that the DeKalb County Police Department was called to a residence on Boulder Springs Point at around 9 a.m. yesterday. It is there that police say Walter Marks, age 46, allegedly opened fire during the argument, injuring a 45-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man.
The male victim managed to flee the scene and called 911 from a nearby gas station. Both victims were subsequently rushed to the hospital, though details on their condition were not immediately forthcoming. Marks was taken into custody and now faces two counts of aggravated assault within the walls of the DeKalb County Jail. In a further twist, officers learned that the male victim, despite being injured, apparently managed to fire back at Marks during the altercation but he, being a convicted felon, was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. Police quickly added charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and false statements to his list of offenses.
Details about what specifically spiraled the argument into gunfire are still under investigation. Meanwhile, there is a clear ripple effect from the violence that has disturbed the community. WSB-TV notes that though the shooting suspect's alleged actions have landed him behind bars, the involvement of a convicted felon returning fire complicates the narrative often spun around victims of gun violence.
