A tragic turn of events unfolded early Monday morning on Highway 97, where a fatal crash claimed two lives in Klamath County. According to a report by Oregon State Police, the collision involved a Nissan Frontier and a Dodge Ram 1500. The incident occurred near milepost 284 and was reported at 5:42 a.m.
Derek Ryan Ford, a 30-year-old resident of Woodland, Colorado, was driving the Nissan northbound when he, for reasons that remain under investigation, crossed into the southbound lane directly into the path of the Dodge operated by Amy Wilson, a 48-year-old from Klamath Falls. Both Ford and Wilson were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The collision resulted in Highway 97 being closed for about three hours while the authorities conducted their on-scene investigation.
The Oregon State Police have not yet determined why Ford's vehicle veered off its path. However, their preliminary remarks shed light on the severity of the head-on collision that abruptly ended the lives of both drivers. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
OSP received assistance from Klamath County Fire District and the Oregon Department of Transportation during the emergency response and investigation.
