In an act of swift maritime intervention, a boat crew from Station Kauai, part of the US Coast Guard Hawaii Pacific, came to the rescue of a 40-foot fishing vessel. The boat was reported to be in distress, taking on water approximately 70 miles offshore, near Ka'ula Island. According to a social media post from USCG Hawaii Pacific, the vessel's master had managed to stabilize the flooding but faced a subsequent disability when a wave damaged and displaced its rudder.
Despite challenging sea conditions, including 5-10 foot waves and 20 mph winds, the crew from Station Kauai orchestrated a 500-foot stern tow with a bridle. The team towed the incapacitated commercial fishing boat all the 57 miles back to Port Allen on Kauai. The entire operation spanned over 15 hours, demonstrating both the endurance and expertise of the Coast Guard team.
Commendations were shared across social media for the exceptional skills and focus exhibited by the crew. "Amazing job to this crew of true professionals for maintaining their focus and getting the job done!" the Coast Guard's caption read. Photographic evidence of the rescue was shared by SN Richard Lofton & BM2 Kyle Hooten, capturing the moments of this successful mission.
