The Northern Utah jazz community is poised to celebrate the life and work of Larry Smith, the founder of the Jazz Kicks band, with a special tribute performance. Scheduled for April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Theatre, USU campus, the event comes in the wake of Smith's passing on Feb. 24. Smith, remembered as an influential musician, educator, and arranger, will be honored by the 17-piece Jazz Kicks ensemble, which is comprised of Utah State University alumni.
According to USU Today, Smith was a beloved figure in the Utah jazz scene, whose post-retirement pursuit led to the formation of the Jazz Kicks Band. In what promises to be an emotive occasion, the concert will feature some of Smith’s favorite jazz standards, meticulously arranged by him for the event. “The theme of this concert is Favorite Selections of Dr. Larry Smith. He actually planned this concert and arranged the music for this concert,” said Greg Wheeler, a close associate and a Ph.D. in music, as per USU Today.
One tune stands out among the selections – 'Corner Pocket' by Count Basie, known to be Smith's favorite. The musical piece has a poignant connection to the man, as it was performed at his funeral, with musicians marching in a New Orleans-style procession into the mortuary, a final nod to Smith's life and love for jazz. His contributions stretched beyond teaching to performing legendary tracks by jazz icons like Chick Corea and Duke Ellington, making him a respected figure in musical circles.
