Landmark news comes from Utah State University's College of Veterinary Medicine as it secures provisional accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education, establishing Utah's premier four-year veterinary degree program. "Receiving the Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the AVMA COE indicates that USU’s program is on track to meet its 11 standards of accreditation," said Dirk Vanderwall, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, as obtained by USU Today. The standards set by the AVMA COE represent the zenith of veterinary medical education in the U.S.
USU can now begin processing applications for its inaugural class, inviting prospective students, the Class of 2029, to start their journey this fall semester. With the accreditation news, students who graduate will be eligible to become licensed or certified veterinarians in the states. Alan L. Smith, interim president of USU, expressed his satisfaction, “This is an incredibly important milestone for the College of Veterinary Medicine at USU,” as per USU Today.
The vision for a veterinary college at USU has been over a century in the making, with initial discussions tracing back to 1907. It was, however, not until 2011 that the Utah Legislature sanctioned the creation and funding of a veterinary medical education program at the university. A temporary arrangement had students spending their first two years of study at USU before moving to Washington State University for the remainder of their program, a partnership slated to conclude with the graduation of the class of 2028.
Utah's $1.82 billion agricultural industry and small animal owners are poised to benefit significantly from the university's venture to produce native veterinary practitioners. Planning to grow the program, USU anticipates welcoming up to 80 students per year into the College of Veterinary Medicine. In line with expansion and development efforts, a new facility funded by the state, to be completed by summer 2026, is underway, designed by Salt Lake City's VCBO Architecture with Jacobson Construction leading the build.
