The incident unfolded shortly before 1 p.m. when the individual used the police call box to alert authorities about his state and armed status, the Walnut Creek Police Department reported on social media.
Responding without delay, Walnut Creek officers were able to de-escalate the situation rapidly, and the man surrendered without struggle or harm to himself or others. He was detained, not as a criminal, but as a human being in dire need of care and taken in for a mental health evaluation.
