Phoenix commuters should brace themselves for a weekend of traffic adjustments and detours as the Arizona Department of Transportation rolls out freeway closures and restrictions from today till next Monday for various improvement projects across the region. Major routes including portions of US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Interstate 10 will be affected, creating potential delays for drivers navigating around these areas. ADOT advises travelers to plan for extra travel time and consider alternative routes during this period.
The bulk of the restrictions impact the West Valley, where westbound I-10 will be completely shuttered between 35th and 83rd avenues from 9 p.m. today to 2 p.m. Saturday for pavement sealing works. Similarly, eastbound travelers on I-10 will see closures between 83rd and 35th avenues starting from 9 p.m. tomorrow until 2 p.m. Sunday. ADOT's announcement provides suggested detour routes, such as utilizing McDowell Road to circumvent the obstructions. However, the closure of the northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) ramps to both directions of I-10 will require additional detouring, particularly for those looking to access Sky Harbor Airport or downtown Phoenix.
Another significant closure occurs along westbound US 60, which will be closed for a traffic shift from Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to I-10 as part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. This restriction starts at 8 p.m. today and lasts until 4 a.m. Monday. Local on-ramps at Country Club Drive, Alma School Road, and Dobson Road will also be closed, pushing drivers to northbound Loop 101 as an alternate route, which connects to the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).
The I-10 corridor within Tempe is undergoing transformations as well, with reductions of travel lanes between US 60 and 32nd Street from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. Strategically, the Broadway Curve Improvement Project necessitates this adjustment. During the weekend, bridge work will result in both east- and westbound I-10 on- and off-ramp closures at 40th Street. This construction will span from Friday evening until early Monday morning, steering traffic towards the 32nd Street and Broadway Road ramps as alternates.
Additional works on Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) will see the right two lanes closed on Saturday for barrier wall installation, which is part of a larger widening project. These closures, along with other roadway improvements, are a reflection of ADOT's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure within the Maricopa County region, largely supported by funds from Proposition 400 and its recent extension through Proposition 479.
For drivers seeking up-to-the-minute traffic conditions, ADOT maintains a comprehensive resource through its Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov. Real-time updates can also be acquired via the az511 app or by calling 511 directly. As projects and road conditions can shift, particularly with unpredictable weather or other unforeseen factors, travelers are encouraged to stay informed to navigate the weekend's traffic challenges with greater ease.
