The Memphis Police Department reported that a woman has died as the result of a car malfunctioning due to transmission issues, while a man remains critically injured. This incident occurred on Vance Avenue near Walnut Street in the Medical District, as covered by Action News 5 and WREG.
Upon their response to the scene around 4:54 p.m., both victims were rushed to Regional One Hospital, though the woman succumbed to her injuries. "A male and a female were transported in critical condition; the female later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased," Action News 5 reported. Further probing by the police revealed that the cause was a failure in the car's transmission, which led to the vehicle rolling over the injured parties.
FOX13 Memphis highlighted that this tragedy was initially reported as a crash, but further investigation by MPD clarified that "the car was having transmission issues and rolled, causing the injuries." This unfortunate event is now being classified by authorities as an accidental injury.
As investigations continue, details surrounding the mechanical flaws of the vehicle are still emerging. The names of the victims have not been released awaiting notification of next of kin. Further information will be divulged by the MPD.
