A crash on Chicago's South Side late Tuesday night left four people injured, including a 1-year-old boy. The collision happened when a silver sedan ran a red light and collided with a black Jeep at the intersection of 71st and State Streets, as per reports by the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m., finding a weapon in the silver car and taking the driver into custody with charges pending.
The young boy, who was a passenger in the Jeep, was examined at Comer Children’s Hospital and was found to be in good condition. Running the red light, the driver of the sedan caused multiple injuries to a 22-year-old female Jeep passenger, who is now at the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, according to the ABC7 Chicago report.
Additionally, the 22-year-old man behind the wheel of the silver sedan received hospital observation while a passenger from his vehicle sustained a punctured lung and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. The driver of the Jeep involved in the crash reportedly refused medical attention, marking a stark contrast to the urgency with which the other victims needed care.
Police have yet to release the identities of those involved nor the specific charges to be filed against the arrested driver. With the Major Accidents Unit leading the investigation, the surrounding community awaits clarity on the circumstances that led to the possession of the weapon that was found and its relation to the incident.
