A routine car malfunction on Interstate 15 led to the unexpected discovery of a deceased man in Davis County, Utah. On Wednesday, a driver, who had previously experienced vehicle issues and left their car on the northbound shoulder near Woods Cross, encountered the body upon returning to resolve their car troubles, as per KUTV. The deceased, identified as a 73-year-old man, was situated in a concealed area between a concrete barrier and a sound wall, an oft-unnoticed gap shielded from the view of passing motorists.
The Utah Highway Patrol received the 911 call at approximately 10:13 a.m. on the day of the discovery, according to Gephardt Daily. Lt. Bryce Kohler from the UHP disclosed that there were no obvious signs of foul play. However, caution is exercised in such scenarios, treating each scene with the thoroughness due a possible homicide investigation. The right lane of the interstate was subsequently closed for several hours to accommodate the investigation by authorities, including the State Bureau of Investigation and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities were able to ascertain the identity of the man thanks to a bag found with him, although his name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. Lt. Kohler indicated that evidence suggested the body hadn't been in place for more than a week, although specifics about what led to that deduction were not provided. "There is nothing to suggest the man would have been intentionally sleeping where he was found," Kohler said, as obtained by Gephardt Daily.
While the discovery was incidental, resulting from an individual's abrupt vehicular distress, the site's visibility or lack thereof was cited as a reason why the remains had not been noticed sooner. "The concrete barrier would have prevented passing highway drivers from spotting the remains," Lt. Kohler told Gephardt Daily. This incident underscores the fact that pedestrians often walk on this stretch of the interstate, which brings forth questions regarding the circumstances leading to the man's death. The driver who stumbled upon the body has been classified as a witness and is not suspected of any involvement, as stated by FOX13.
