State Route 240 in Richland is undergoing significant upgrades to improve safety and efficiency for travelers. The $8 million project, led by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in collaboration with its contractors, is currently underway. The project includes the addition of new lanes to improve merging safety, as well as the installation of a noise wall and updates to traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, lighting, and signage.

"We understand that construction can be an inconvenience, but traveler safety and the safety of workers is our top priority," Alejandro Sanguino, WSDOT project engineer, stated in a recent announcement. According to the WSDOT report, last month, the project kicked off with a noise wall's construction near the Moon River RV Resort.

The upgrades to SR 240 aim to improve traffic flow and address noise concerns in the area. As work on the noise wall progresses, the southern section of the route near the RV resort is expected to see reduced noise levels. Beginning this month, crews will focus on roadway surface repairs and paving, which may lead to some disruptions in travel patterns.

June marks the start of the next phase, targeting the Hagen Road and SR 240 intersection. WSDOT plans involve reconstructing and widening the road, as well as tweaking signal configurations. "The project will help reduce congestion and improve operations and safety in the area," Sanguino told WSDOT. For the convenience of the travelers, a signed detour will guide them via Kingsgate Way, Battelle Boulevard, and Stevens Drive to SR 240 during nightly closures from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., Sunday evening until Saturday morning. The project is expected to be completed by August, leading to improved traffic flow and reduced noise for travelers.
